Sodick’s oil-based wire EDM technology is helping manufacturers address the demanding requirements of miniature precision components, with applications including luxury watchmaking.

Wire just 10 microns in diameter — equivalent to 0.01mm — illustrates the extraordinary scale of fine-wire machining. For manufacturers producing intricate watch components, technology at this level opens up possibilities for exceptionally small and detailed features.

In a conversation with MTDCNC’s Rowan Easter-Robinson, our colleague Giuseppe Addelia from Sodick Deutschland explains how Sodick approaches these challenges, discussing the AP250 using 30-micron wire alongside specially modified machines capable of handling wire as fine as 10 microns.

Meeting the demands of watchmaking

Luxury watchmaking brings together miniature dimensions, complex geometry and exacting expectations for accuracy and surface quality. Producing these components requires careful control throughout the machining process.

Our oil-based wire EDM technology uses controlled electrical discharges to remove material from an electrically conductive workpiece. With no conventional cutting forces acting on the component, the process is well suited to delicate profiles and intricate features.

Fine wire enables access to smaller details and tighter internal geometries. The wire diameters discussed in the interview describe the cutting wire itself; they should not be confused with the dimensional tolerance of the finished component.

Technology and expertise working together

Successfully machining at this scale requires more than a fine wire. Precise machine movement, reliable wire handling, controlled discharge energy and stable machining conditions must work together to achieve the required result.

Giuseppe’s explanation provides an insight into how these factors support demanding applications, where even a small feature can play a critical role in a component’s performance.

The interview also distinguishes between the AP250 operating with 30-micron wire and the specialist modifications required to handle 10-micron wire. These configurations should be considered around the specific component, material and production requirements.
