When most people think of Sodick, they naturally think of high-precision EDM machines, manufacturing technology and engineering solutions.
But Sodick technology can also be found in some rather different applications.
At the Peace Stadium in Nagasaki, Japan, two Sodick LED140 supplemental lighting systems were recently pictured working on the pitch following the first game in August.
The stadium uses warm-season grass, which creates its own set of challenges as natural light levels, temperature and seasonal conditions change throughout the year.
To help maintain the quality of the playing surface, grounds maintenance company Office Show has been working alongside Sodick FT, combining practical turf-management expertise with Sodick supplemental lighting technology.
The LED140 systems can be positioned over areas of the pitch that require additional support when natural sunlight alone is insufficient.
However, maintaining a high-quality playing surface involves far more than simply applying additional light.
The effectiveness of supplemental lighting depends on a combination of factors including positioning, light uniformity, moisture levels, airflow, temperature and timing. Just as importantly, the grounds team must continually assess the condition of the turf and adapt its approach accordingly.
Sodick technology provides an additional tool to help the team manage those conditions, but achieving a consistently high-quality playing surface still relies heavily on measurement, experience and careful day-to-day decision making.
It is an interesting example of how technology and engineering developed within the wider Sodick organisation can be applied beyond the manufacturing environments the company is traditionally associated with.
